Alot of characters see water as their safe haven, especially the ocean, rain and lakes. When Scout finds her brother dead she leaves and goes to the beach and starts a fire on the sand. Running symbolizes running away from problems. Fyfe runs from his father after he beats Fyfe up. Scout runs and Brandon runs after her after her brother dies. Emma runs after Mitch ditched her on their date.
[edit] Not wanting to grow up/Being in a hurry to grow up
Danny is the one who refuses to grow up and deal with being an adult. He's the oldest and he's had to repeat grade 11 three times. While, on the other hand, Emma is deparate to grow up and is already taking care of her brother and dad because her mum isn't there. Lydia has moments of acting like a kid and Veronica is always taking care of her. Scout is always taking about the future, instead of living in the present. Veronica has her whole life after high school mapped out.

Scout probably has the most consisant low self esteem. Veronica, Brandon, Emma and Mitch also go through times of low self esteem. Scout's self-esteem is one of the reason she falls back into her depression. Lydia and Danny are both seen as having very high self-esteem, Danny comes off cocky and arogent. Fyfe and Tony are pretty much in the middle, they have moments of up and down.
[edit] Sexuality/Relationships
Questioning sexuality is a big part of this show. Veronica is very confused about her sexuality and turns to Tony, who is an openly gay boy who helps her discover how she really feels. Major relationships like Lydia/Danny, Brandon/Lydia, Emma/Mitch are important to plots. Also special relationships like Scout/Coleman, Scout/Ben, Emma/Danny, Tony/Veronica and Fyfe/Scout.

Almost every character has gone through moments of loneliness. (Scout feels lonely because her mum ran off to Toronto, her dad doesn't really know her, Brandon is busy with being in love with Lydia. She turns to Coleman to cure her loneliness but he ends up making her more lonely. She also gets close to her brother but he dies, which leaves her where she was before). Veronica feels lonely when she sees her friends being in relationships.
[edit] Manipulation
Danny likes to control people, such as friends, relationships and teachers through manipulation. He's not very extreme, but he is very convincing and charming, which people trust and then he manips them into doing dumb or other things for him or for his entertainment.
[edit] Parties
When there is a party in this show, it usually means something big is going to happen. In The Party, Lydia/Mitch kiss, which is the climax. In Tony's episode, he throws a party for Veronica's birthday and true feelings come out. In Lydia's episode there is a major party. Lydia is known for having wicked big parties. Danny, Lydia, Tony and Fyfe are known for being huge party people.

There is a running joke that Danny always forgets about Emma. He forgets she is around, where she is, what she is doing, what school she goes to, how old she is, when her birthday is, when to pick her up and others.
[edit] Ambition
Many characters are driven by ambition. Fyfe has huge ambitions to play professional soccer and his drive is very strong. Veronica is driven to be a lawyer or something equally sucessful. Tony wants to be an actor. Scout wants to be a writer.
[edit] Food
Food in TWIST is used for comfort. Fyfe is an amazing cook, whom is always cooking for people. Lydia is always eating or drinking something, and gets comments on how much she eats up how skinny she is. While Scout is in her depression she is seen eating alot, but when she is on the mend she is seen eating less, and then when Ben dies again she refuses food. Coleman is always eating very healthy and organic food. Emma makes dinner for her father and brother, because she feels obliged to take care of them.

Colours are very symbolic in TWIST. The ocean (blue) is supposed to symbolize peace. Lydia tends to wear vibrant colours which symbolize her vibrant personality.
